Venture vs. Venture X: Which Card Wins at $4,800/Month?

This analysis now lives as a live tool. The version below is a snapshot; the ranking that updates with every card change is at /compare/capital-one-venture-vs-capital-one-venture-x.

The more expensive card doesn't always give you more value. The Capital One Venture charges a $95 annual fee; the Capital One Venture X charges $395. Both earn 2x miles on everything. Here is what that comes to for a median US household — and the one habit that flips the answer.

Before the numbers, the assumption that matters most: every dollar figure below is an estimate at 1.5¢ per Capital One mile. That is our typical valuation for miles moved to Capital One's transfer partners — not a guaranteed cash amount. Redeem for cash or a statement credit and a mile is worth less; redeem well through a transfer and it can be worth more. How we value points.

The spending we used

  • Groceries: $650
  • Dining: $420
  • Gas: $180
  • Travel: $300
  • Everything else: $3,250

That is $4,800 a month — the median US household, and the same sample profile the card finder and our card pages default to.

Ongoing value, with optional credits left unused

RollsRewards calculates these estimated ongoing annual values:

  • Capital One Venture: $1,633
  • Capital One Venture X: $1,483

That's $150 more per year with Venture, after each card's full annual fee, assuming 1.5¢ per mile and excluding optional travel credits. Venture X's anniversary miles (10K Anniversary Miles, about $150 at our valuation) are counted for it because they arrive automatically — and they post at your first account anniversary, the end of month 12.

But here's the interesting part

If you already book travel through Capital One Travel and fully use Venture X's $300 annual travel credit, Venture X moves ahead by $150 instead: $1,783 against Venture's $1,633.

A credit only counts when it replaces travel you would have bought anyway. That is why the ranking leaves it at $0 until you confirm you use it — the fee is never discounted on your behalf.

So which card is better?

It depends on how you travel and whether you'll actually use the benefits. Lounge access and the Capital One Travel portal's higher earn rates are not valued in the ranking at all: they explain why you might like a card, not what it pays.

That's why we built RollsRewards. Find the card that fits your spending — not just the one with the biggest advertised perks. The live head-to-head with today's figures is at Capital One Venture vs. Venture X, and the card finder runs the same math on your own numbers.

The welcome offers are a separate question

Venture's current welcome offer is 75,000 miles, plus an additional first-year opportunity: up to $300 in eligible Capital One Travel credit; Venture X's is 75,000 miles. Those are first-year value, and we keep them out of the ongoing numbers above. Each card page shows the first-year figure beside the ongoing one, with the spend requirement: Capital One Venture · Capital One Venture X. Worth considering if you already want this type of card.

Estimates use typical point valuations, include Venture X's anniversary miles, and exclude one-time welcome offers. Actual redemption value and benefits vary.
