Our default household's spending
grocery: $500/mo · dining: $300/mo · travel: $100/mo · everything else: $350/mo · total $1,250/mo
Student cards are built for a thin or brand-new credit history, and every one we track has no annual fee — so the contest is pure earn. This ranking runs a lower-spending budget through the same calculator as every other guide and names the student card that earns the most on it.

The catch most lists skip.
With no fees to weigh, the differences come down to where each card pays a bonus and whether you would use it: a flat rate on everything is the safe default, rotating categories pay more only in the quarters you activate and spend in them, and a dining-and-streaming bonus is only worth having if that is where the money goes. The bigger question is usually whether the issuer will say yes, and that is the issuer's call — our first-card guide covers building credit from nothing. If you already have a credit history you are not limited to student cards, and the escape-hatch row shows what the best card outside this list earns on the same budget.
