No car, no gas category, and $200 a month on CharlieCard reloads and commuter rail. Transit is the forgotten rewards category: the card built for it (Amex Green, 3x transit) closed to new applicants in 2026, and we never recommend cards you can't get. What's left is a field where almost everything pays 1x on your commute.
That turns the math upside down. At $200/mo, even a 3% transit rate is only worth about $48/yr more than a flat 1% — so the ranking is decided by the other $1,740 a month, and the winners are breadth cards that treat the T as base spend and out-earn the specialists everywhere else.
Key insight
Citi Strata Premier wins at ~$614/yr net despite paying 1x on the T — 3x on dining, groceries, and travel for a $95 fee covers everything else this commuter spends. The only top-five card that actually bonuses transit is Blue Cash Preferred (3% transit, 6% groceries), and it still lands fourth at ~$480/yr because its rewards thin out beyond those categories. Wells Fargo Autograph — the best open 3x-transit card — finishes fourteenth at ~$422/yr for the same reason. The lesson: $200/mo of transit at 3% instead of 1% is worth $4/mo, and no $4/mo edge survives a breadth gap. Rank the whole wallet, not the commute.
