Best Credit Cards for Everyday Spending

Guide text reviewed September 28, 2026 · figures computed at build from cards verified September 14, 2026 or later · Methodology v2026.09.4 · Ranked by net annual value (rewards minus the full annual fee — credits count only if you use them), not by who pays us.

Points valued at typical value (1.5¢ for transferable points). A different redemption style can change this order — switch yours in the finder and watch it change.

Our default household's spending

grocery: $600/mo · dining: $400/mo · gas: $250/mo · streaming: $40/mo · everything else: $500/mo · total $1,790/mo

Most wallets are groceries, restaurants, gas and the errands in between, with little travel. This ranking is for that wallet: the card that nets the most after its fee when the everyday categories are most of what you spend.

Best everyday spending card for our default household

Best overall

Citi Strata Premier

$677/year at $1,790/month total spending

Why it wins:
Useful groceries (3x), dining (3x) and gas (3x) categories carry it; the rest earns 1x.
Standout benefit:
3x groceries + 3x dining
Annual fee:
$95
Trade-off:
$95 annual fee — already subtracted from every figure here. Beats the best $0-fee alternative (Citi Strata) once you spend about $120/mo on groceries + dining — you're at $1,000/mo.

Our take — Clear win. About +$677/year versus paying with debit. Already hold a card? Run your numbers →

Why not the runner-up or the $0-fee option?

Why not Capital One Venture? It earns less on your groceries + dining spending — $128/yr behind on this exact spending.

Why not the $0-fee option (Citi Strata)? Your dining + groceries spending earns $296/yr more here — enough to come out $201/yr ahead after the $95 fee.

The catch most lists skip.

When groceries, dining and gas carry the wallet, category cards have their best shot at beating a flat-rate card: their bonus rates apply to most of the spend, and there is little travel or everything-else spend where a flat card earns more. Two things still decide it — whether the card's bonus categories match yours, and whether its caps sit above your spend. Add travel or a large everything-else bucket and the broad cards take the lead back; the Best Overall guide is that ranking.
